We arrived in Venice in the rain, and we left Venice in the rain. Just as well... it's easier to leave somewhere you'd wished you'd budgeted more time for when you know that you'd be soggy if you stayed.
We headed west past Padova and circled around Verona before heading north toward the Tirolean Alps. The scenery here is spectacular... we followed a river valley with the occasional castle or walled city overlooking it as we climbed into the Alps. The rain gave way, although the sky remained overcast. Gradually, road signs went from Italian to Italian and German, well before we crossed over into Austria. I was beginning to see words I recognized, although it's still a little unnerving when you see a sign with exclamation marks. Even if you remember that "vorsicht" means "caution," it doesn't give you a lot of comfort when you can't read the rest of the sentence and you don't know what you're being cautious
about.
We crossed the border and came down into Innsbruck, finding our hotel with little difficulty. The "Basic Hotel Innsbruck" is by far the least basic place we've stayed in Europe... also the most expensive, but then we have reliable hot water, a shower that's more than 2 ft x 2 ft, and a few other amenities that have not always been available.
We are a block off of the old part of Innsbruck, and we wandered around a bit before grabbing some food and turning in.
